Unplugged Concert for Earth Hour

Ms Stafford , Ms O Dea and Ms Billinger set up an Unplugged Cncert at lunch time on Friday 30th  to mark  Earth Hour. Students from different years performed to a packed dinning assembly.  Thanks to all staff and students that attended the event!

n 2007, WWF-Australia inspired Sydney-siders to show their support for climate change action in the first ever Earth Hour event. It showed that everyone, from children to CEOs and politicians, has the power to change the world they live in. In Sydney, Australia, 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights out for one hour to take a stand against climate change.

In 2008, the plan was to take Earth Hour to the rest of Australia. But then the City of Toronto, Canada, signed up and it wasn’t long before 35 countries and almost 400 cities and towns were part of the event. It said something compelling to the world: that the climate challenges facing our planet are so significant that change needs to be global.

With the invitation to ‘switch off’ extended to everyone, Earth Hour quickly became an annual global event. It’s scheduled on the last Saturday of every March – closely coinciding with the equinox to ensure most cities are in darkness as it rolled out around the Earth.

Public Bodies Doing Their Bit

Cork City Council has long championed renewable sources of energy. The Irish Government has recently published an action plan to reduce energy demand in the country.

The proposed plan examines how the 20% reduction in energy demand - 33% for public bodies will be achieved over the period to 2020.

Public bodies are required to purchase only energy efficient lighting when replacing or installing new lighting, to take on board an energy rating system for public buildings and ensure that all street lighting is energy efficient.

 Fota  Electric Car Facts

At Fota we had the opportunity to closely examine electric cars.  When we came back to school we did some research to share with everyone.

Types:There are different types of electric cars.   Electric cars come in all sizes and performance.

Charging: Batteries can be used until they are dead just like gas tanks can be run empty.  Car batteries are recharged just like phone batteries.  It typically takes overnight to charge a battery. They can be charged as fast as 20 minutes, Charging overnight can be done with any normal electric outlet.

Performance: Electric cars can go very fast.  The current record is 230 KPH.

Benefits: The benefits of EVs include less air pollution, quieter, and lower cost to operate.  They are potentially more reliable due to fewer parts and mature technology (140 years).  They have similar power and the smaller EVs may be more manoeuverable in traffic and be easier to park.

 Energy: Let's save it!

Energy: Let's save it!" is a classical animated cartoon.

Not a single word! This video contains only images and music.

Enjoy the energy saving tips, and save money...

A family starts wasting energy carelessly and unknowingly, from the moment they wake up.

Until something unexpectedly happens...

In 3'40", this cartoon shows both the bad and the good behaviour in energy consumption.

It presents simple and basic energy saving tips to save the planet and to save money, would it be at home, at work, or on the way to work.

Everyday Appliances - how to cut costs

At Coláiste Muire we are proud to work with our local community to reduce energy consumption in the home.

Every day appliances, if not used correctly can waste lots of energy.

Check the rating of appliances efficiency rating.  The more efficient the appliance, the less it costs to run!

On the right, the video contains lots of helpful tips to reduce electricity bills.

Top-tip for schools

Make posters to encourage a green lifestyle & to help your school gain Green Flags.

  • It's also good for creativity
  • It can raise awareness

Coláiste Muire's Energy Survey

The graph below illustrates the energy we used before and after energy week.

Reviews were conducted in all classrooms and graphs were completed in maths classes throughout the day.

When people were made aware of the energy lost they stopped wasting energy.

We will continue to improve on our best.

Energy saving tips when at school

  1. Turn off lights when leaving a room

  2. Close doors to keep the heat in

  3. If a room is too warm turn off the radiator instead of opening a window

  4. Do not leave appliances on standby as this uses electricity

  5. If it is 4 o clock, take responsibility and turn off the computer or photocopier you are using

  6. Apply these energy saving tips at home

 Energy Questionnaire

Student's compiled a list of questions that were distributed to staff and discussed with the Principal and Vice Principal.
